As the Premier League season reaches its climax, today marks 20 years since arguably the biggest collapse by any title chasing side.
In 1996, Newcastle United were leading the way under the Kevin Keegan, building up a 12-point advantage over Manchester United by January.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side overtook Newcastle in March and eventually wrapped up the title.
Keegan had been feeling the pressure in the run in, and his frustrations peaked with a rant on April 29th when he lost his cool and had a pop at Ferguson on Sky Sports.
I’ve kept quiet but I’ll tell you something. He went down in my estimation when he said that. We’ve not resorted to that.
But I’ll tell ya. You can tell him now, he’ll be watching it. We’re still fighting for this title and he’s got to go to Middlesbrough and get something and…and I’ll tell you honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it!
United did go to Middlesbrough and comfortably won 3-0, while Newcastle could only manage a draw at Tottenham Hotspur.
