What makes Euro 2024 special?

A thumping opener from Germany to kick off their campaign, an underdog story for Slovakia against Belgium, Kylian Mbappe suffering a broken nose, N’Golo Kante covering the length of the pitch, a 3-1 thriller between Georgia and Turkey all in the opening round of matches in what promises to be an exciting European tournament.

So far, we have been left in awe at the excitement generated by the Euro 2024 this early into the tournament – a couple of unlikely heroes and villains have taken centre stage.

Germany, alongside Spain, are tied for the most Euro trophies, three each. Winning Euro 2024 on home soil would move them outright into first place as the country with the most European Championship trophies, a huge flex for Germans against their close rivals while also boasting a 36-year-old Julian Nagelsmannas the youngest manager to ever win the Euros since Spain’s Jose Villalonga who won it at age 44 in 1964. However, France, with two European Championship trophies, would like to lay their hands on the trophy once more for the first time since 2000.

Some questions are unanswered concerning what could be Cristiano Ronaldo’s European Championship. Cristiano leads the all-time list of goalscorers in the Euros and would be looking to even better his record. It would be exciting to see the roles reversed from their last European Championship victory in 2016, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having the final say this time.

Speaking about the Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham could seal the deal provided England are victorious in their Euros ambition. Toni Kroos could also cap a beautiful end to his career with one more European trophy as he retires.

Magical performances from youngsters like Jamal Musiala, Lamine Yamal and Arda Guler have added to the prowess of the Euros. It has been wonderful to see these youngsters unfazed by the occasion, and they have taken it in their stride to perform on the big stage. A good showing from the younger players has been one of the best parts of the Euros. It is also a chance for the likes of Pedri, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham to get into the next stage in their careers as they make their mark on the international stage – a transition from the legends to rising stars.

It is also a chance to enjoy the veterans in what could be their last European competition—savouring the last games for the legends of the game as they pass the baton to the younger players.

The semi-automated VAR has also helped referees seamlessly make offside decisions, which has improved the quality of the games and helped to reduce the time wasted in making on-field decisions.

A couple of moments from Euro 2024 already live rent-free in our heads. The bangers, late wins and rescues, elastic goalkeeper saves, and as well the ‘Xherdan Shaqiri’ highlights. These are the special moments that excite us whenever the Euros come around. We can feel it even from our homes – the electric atmosphere, the loudest cheers, the celebrations and the upsets down to the trophy-lifting ceremony.

The potential of a fairy tale finish for some, an opportunity for others to etch their names in the sands of time – the stakes are high, and we are here for it!
