Three young stars from the Eredivisie destined for the Premier League

The Eredivisie has always been a hot spot for young talent, which is no different this year. Ajax are famously the main team in the division who have an array of future stars, however, some other teams are also producing talent of their own.

In recent seasons, the likes of Donyell Malen, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt have left the Dutch first tier for a move to Europe’s elite. But who are the current players shining in the Eredivisie and what Premier League club could they move to?

First up is PSV Eindhoven’s star in the making, Cody Gakpo. At the time of writing, the 22-year-old has 16 goals and 15 assists to his name in 37 appearances for his boyhood club. This season has certainly been his breakout season, having already doubled the goal contributions he achieved from the last campaign.

His performances in the 2018/19 season for Jong PSV warranted a place in the senior team the same season. Gakpo, despite other young attacking talent surrounding him at PSV, stands out and is very capable of taking the game by the scruff of the neck to get more points in PSV’s push for the Eredivisie title.

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal are the front-runners for Gakpo’s signature with other world-beating teams like Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City interested in the player. A move to the Emirates would make sense for Gakpo as the attacking talent of the Gunners would make it a very attractive proposition for the man in form.

Next in this list, we have PSV’s title rivals AFC Ajax and their Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez who surprisingly is 24-years-old now and a big move could be on the cards. Having broken through Club America in Mexico, he spent three years in the senior team there before moving to Ajax in 2019.

He is a versatile player with both centre-midfield and centre-back being his main positions. Alvarez has been a mainstay in Ajax’s starting eleven this season and his stature seems to be growing. Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester City were linked with a move for Alvarez in January, as per Team Talk, and that interest could be renewed in the summer.

Lastly is a midfielder who has shone for Feyenoord, Orkun Kökçü. He joined Feyenoord’s academy in 2014 following his departure from Groningen and has nearly made 100 appearances for the Rotterdam-based side.

The Turkish international has featured regularly in Feyenoord’s midfield this campaign but they may struggle to keep hold of their man. Kökçü is also able to play in the attacking midfield role and six goals and eight assists show that he is very capable of playing in a more advanced role.

A move to Arsenal was rumoured in 2020, according to Transfermarkt, however, that did not come to fruition. I believe that a move to a club like Leicester City would be a good step for Kökçü’s career as he would be able to compete and in the long term earn a starting spot.

There is a vast amount of talent on display in the Eredivisie and these three names that I have highlighted I believe are some of the hottest prospects in the division. I also think that the Netherlands is a very good place for young and upcoming talent to play as it allows them to make themselves more well known in the football world.

Out of these three names, who do you think could be a success in the Premier League?
