Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is believed to have targeted Barcelona’s Thomas Vermaelen as he looks to add to the club’s defensive stocks this summer.
Spanish publication Sport has gone with the story, stating that the Anfield club have made a first offer of €10 million for the 30-year-old who played for Arsenal between 2009 and 2014.
With Mamadou Sakho’s future up in the air after a positive test for a banned substance, Klopp may need to find himself a starting centre back to partner Kolo Toure and Vermaelen fits the bill.
The Belgian international’s time in Spain has been plagued by injury, and he managed just one appearance in his first season with Barcelona.
This time round, he has featured more often but is by no means a regular in the side.
Liverpool could face competition from fellow Premier League side West Ham United, as well as Turkish giants Besiktas, for Vermaelen’s signature.
