It was a night to forget for Ireland fans on Tuesday as Ireland’s World Cup hopes were snuffed out by a Danish side that showed their class with what turned out to be a dominant win to send the visitors to next summer’s tournament in Russia.
Early, albeit cautious, optimism was emboldened with Duffy’s sixth minute header putting the hosts into the lead. However, much of the ‘too early’ talk was confirmed as Ireland failed to capitalise on further chances and conspired with calamitous defending to see them go in 2-1 down at the break.
Things went from bad to worse after the break as the Danes dominated in midfield, seemingly attacking at will. Christian Eriksen was imperious for the guests and completed a stellar performance with two further strikes to put the tie beyond doubt before a late Nicklas Bendtner penalty meant it was a night to forget for The Boys in Green.
Alwyn Robinson was on the ground for Back Page Football to capture the action.
