Gallery: Ireland see off Georgia in McCarthy’s Lansdowne Road return

A first half goal from Conor Hourihane was enough for the Republic of Ireland to claim three points in their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Georgia last night.

The Aston Villa midfielder fired home a wonderful free kick, just minutes after fans had thrown tennis balls onto the pitch in protest against Football Association of Ireland (FAI) main man John Delaney.

David McGoldrick put in a Man of the Match performance up front, while Glenn Whelan was superb in midfield having been recalled to the fold by Mick McCarthy.

For his part, McCarthy was understandably pleased to kick off his second spell in charge with two wins and two clean sheets following Friday’s victory in Gibraltar.

The Republic sit top of Group F after Switzerland and Denmark played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the other game played on Tuesday.
