The Republic of Ireland women’s team went down 3-1 against Germany at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday night, ending their hopes of qualification for the 2022 European Championships.
The Germans sit top of Group I and showed their quality by taking a two-goal lead thanks to a penalty from Svenja Huth and a Tabea Waßmuth strike.
Katie McCabe reduced the arrears with a spot kick of her own following a foul on Denise O’Sullivan, the first goal conceded by the visitors in the campaign.
Ireland battled hard for an equaliser but were undone five minutes from full time when Waßmuth grabbed her second of the night.
A 2-1 win for Ukraine over Montenegro sees them grab second spot and a place in playoffs while Ireland finished in third, a disappointing ending to what had been a great campaign over the first few games.
