Weekend Betting Selections

The week gone by….

Who says that the International break is boring? Okay, Irish fans in a dispersed Aviva Stadium might have been forgiven for leaning towards that adjective. But if you were a Swede cheering on your boys in yellow on Tuesday night you probably saw the most spectacular goal that you are ever likely to witness. They call him ‘Ibra’, some call him overrated and some England fans were even describing him as a poorer version of Andy Carroll during their chants, albeit in less polite terms. He is a man that is sometimes described as overconfident but maybe you have to be edging towards this type of mindset to be a really top player. Why be half confident or otherwise as a striker? Regardless of the fact that it was a friendly match, Ibra scored all four goal to give his country a memorable, inspiring and rare 4-2 victory over a strong England side. “Impossible for a normal athlete,” was how Wenger described his fourth goal.

The love for Ibrahimovic has become widespread, but apparently the man belongs to Paris St-Germain. Fear not though, the Premier League is back and their are plenty of players that will be looking to impress you with their skills this weekend. However if you want more than just skills and would like to make a few quid, you might consider some of our betting tips below.

Liverpool v Wigan (Sat, 3pm, Live on Setanta Sports 1)

A match concerning two quite evenly matched teams. Only a few years ago, that last sentence would have been seen as sarcasm, as a joke perhaps. But here we are in 2012 and with eleven games played this season, it is the Latics who can boast more league wins. Roberto Martinez’s men have beaten West Ham, Tottenham and Southampton this season while The Reds have managed to win against Norwich and Reading. Brendan Rodgers’ men go into this match as very strong favourites. Why wouldn’t they? The match is being played in Anfield. Remember, that place is a fortress. Remember? Granted, Luis Suarez has been in fine form. But so has Arouna Kone. He is the Latics striker with bleached blonde hair in case you haven’t noticed. You could be forgiven for not noticing mind, given that Wigan never seem to get the attention and credit that they deserve.

Verdict: This one is too close to call but that means that there is value available. Liverpool on their day are well capable of winning easily, but Wigan are capable of the win too if Liverpool are off song. The value lies with the Latics who can be backed at a price of 6/1 with Setantabet for the win. The draw is priced at 100/30 and f you are confident about Liverpool, they will offer you a price of 9/20 which is far too short in my eyes. So all in all, the bet below looks like it has a decent chance at a decent price. It is a bet for Wigan to either win or draw the match.

Bet Recommendation: Wigan (+1) @ 13/8 with Setantabet.com

Arsenal v Tottenham

Arsenal go into this match as odds on favourites. Nevertheless, their defence has looked highly vulnerable of late and they no longer have the attacking talent of RVP. Olivier Giroud recently set himself a target of 15 goals for the season and there aren’t many Arsenal fans that have been filled with huge confidence after hearing that. Sitting eight in the table, the Gunners have registered just two home wins this so far and after conceding three goals against Fulham, you have to wonder how they will cope with Tottenham’s attacking talent. Wenger and his men go into this game under a fair degree of pressure and it is far from certain that they will be able to respond positively to it. The bet below will return your stake if the match is a draw and will payout if Spurs win. This type of bet is a very good option when you are confident that your selection won’t be beaten but you are worried about the possibility of a draw match.

Bet Recommendation: Tottenham (Draw No Bet) @ 13/8 with Setantabet.com

West Brom v Chelsea

There is no doubting that West Brom have done themselves proud this season but Steve Clarke’s men look likely to be well beaten by his former club. Chelsea will be well rested and they are looking good on the counter attack with their slick movement and form of Juan Mata. All in all, their style of play and strengths look well suited to this away fixture. Expect the Blues to have too much colour for the Baggies.

Bet Recommendation: Chelsea to win @ Evens with Setantabet.com

QPR v Southampton

Southampton are well capable of scoring in this one and the question is whether QPR can score more than them. The pressure is on for both managers but one would feel that anything less than a win wouldn’t be good enough for Mark Hughes. The R’s will look to attack the Saints and that could leave them vulnerable at the back.

Verdict: QPR are going to find this very difficult. Their willingness to win may prove to a weakness that Southampton can exploit and once again the Draw No Bet market is a very attractive option.

Bet Recommendation: Back Southampton (Draw No Bet) @ 7/4 with Setantabet.com
