Iceland’s fairy tale run at EURO 2016 came to an end last night as they went down 5-2 against host nation France at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
The French got things moving early when Olivier Giroud raced through and opened the scoring with a left foot finish on 13 minutes.
Paul Pogba doubled the lead in the 20th minute with a towering header from a corner, before Dimitri Payet found the bottom right corner of the net from outside the penalty area to make it 3-0.
Right on the stroke of half time, Antoine Griezmann made it four with a delightful dink over the onrushing Iceland goalkeeper.
The Scandinavian side reduced their arrears on 56 minutes when Kolbeinn Sigthorsson turned home a cross from the right by Gylfi Sigurdsson.
However, Giroud struck again on the hour mark with a header for his third goal of the tournament.
Iceland rounded out the scoring late on when Birkir Bjarnason also scored with his head.
France now move on to the semi finals where they will meet Germany in what is a mouth watering prospect between two of the game’s giants.
