Trap names strong side for Socceroos game

Football - Republic of Ireland Press Conference

Giovanni Trapattoni has named a strong starting eleven for the friendly against Australia on Wednesday evening.

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson will partner Stoke’s Glenn Whelan in midfield for the game in Thomond. It was believed Blackburn’s Keith Andrews would partner Whelan, but Trap changed his mind this evening.

I wish to see the new players like Gibson so maybe I will start Gibson for Andrews. I wish to see the young players grow. Gibson and Andrews are similar players, but Gibson also has another vision. It is important to be strong and he has a strong personality.

Wolves’ new signing Kevin Doyle has been passed fit to play, and will partner Robbie Keane up front. Shay Given will start in goals, and Sean St Ledger has been including at centre half.

Celtic winger Aiden McGeady gets the nod in midfield, as does Newcastle’s Damien Duff who scored at the weekend. The Italian boss has denied Stephen Hunt’s trip to meet up with Hull City has disrupted the squad.

We have Liam Lawrence who can play there so it is fine.

Ireland team v Australia: Shay Given; John O’Shea; Richard Dunne; Sean St Ledger; Kevin Kilbane; Aiden McGeady; Darron Gibson; Glenn Whelan; Damien Duff; Robbie Keane; Kevin Doyle
