Tonight’s international round-up

Australia beat the Republic in Limerick, while England come back from 2-0 to draw against the Netherlands.

The Republic of Ireland were beaten 3-0 this evening in their last friendly ahead of the World Cup Qualifier against Cyprus next month. Everton midfielder Tim Cahill netted a first half brace before David Carney scored a beautiful goal from 25 yards.

Robbie Keane came close for the Irish midway through the first half, but fine Schwarzer goalkeeping kept the Spurs striker out. Blackburn’s Keith Andrews hit the post, while Sean St Ledger came close but it wasn’t enough as Australia won through on a 3-0 scoreline.

Meanwhile in Amsterdam the home side took an early lead with Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt punishing a Rio Ferdinand error. The Dutch strengthened their lead before half time – Rafael van der Vaart scoring after a lack of concentration from Gareth Barry.

England came back impressively in the second half – a Jermain Defoe double enough to earn a draw for Capello’s side, latching on to a Frank Lampard pass before meeting a James Milner cross.

In more important circumstances, Scotland had a World Cup qualifier to attend to in amongst all the friendlies. However they suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Norway. Gary Caldwell was sent off early on – ex-Liverpool defender John Arne Riise duly converting the resulting free-kick, before Morten Gamst Pedersen added a second on the stroke of half time.

Erik Huseklepp scored a third for the home side, before Blackburn’s Pedersen added a fourth from a set piece.

In Windsor Park Northern Ireland played out a 1-1 friendly with Israel. Grant McCann scored an early free kick for the home side, before Elyaniv Barda equalised eight minutes later for a share of the spoils.

Wales however were beaten 2-1 away to Montenegro, Sam Vokes equalising after Stevan Jovetic had put the home team in front who scored again to win the game.

Elsewhere, Brian Kerr’s Faroe Islands side were beaten against France in a 1-0 game, while Germany beat Azerbaijan 2-0 in their qualifying group. Argentina beat Russia in an entertaining 3-2 friendly, while a Luis Fabiano goal won it for Brazil in Estonia.

  1. Glen Johnson really worried me for England, he was run ragged by both Robben and Babel. As good as he is going forward his defending has always been an issue for me. The Dutch were technically a better team in the first half and if the substitutions on both teams had not happened I couldn’t have seen England getting close.

Ireland and Scotland were also poor last night, although Riise should have been sent of for Norway we could have changed the face of the game, I can’t believe he didn’t even get a yellow.
