May 16 saw the Bundesliga season return after two months out due to the coronavirus lockdown.
Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and even Borussia Monchengladbach are all in the mix for the title. In this article we will analyse each team and assess the likelihood they will lift the trophy in June.
The current reigning champions, Bayern Munich, are favourites to win the Bundesliga this season, the current odds are 2/9 from Betway.
his would be Bayern Munich’s eighth successive Bundesliga title win, you’d imagine Bayern fans will be disappointed with anything less than the top honour.
Bayern are currently four points clear of fellow German giants, Borussia Dortmund. Eighteen wins in twenty six matches, and an impressive goalscoring record averaging nearly three goals per game with 75 goals in 26 games. Bayern have the second best home record in the division and the best away record. You can’t deny with stats like these, Bayern Munich are firm favourites for the title.
In terms of key players, Bayern have many to choose from. But how could we talk about Bayern Munich without mentioning Robert Lewandowski?
Lewandowski has an extraordinary goalscoring record, 26 goals in 24 games makes him the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga. Not only this season has Lewandowksi been a key player for Bayern, having scored 17 goals or more per season since joining from Dortmund in 2014. Lewandowski also has the highest match rating in the Bundesliga this season, with an 8.1.
The provider for many of Lewandowski’s goals this season, the one club man, Thomas Muller is the other key player we are going to mention for Bayern.
Six goals and sixteen assists in twenty six matches this season, Thomas Muller has the most assists in the Bundesliga, seven ahead of his teammate Serge Gnarby. Throughout his career Muller has played in several positions.
We’ve seen him as a forward, a wide midfielder, and an attacking midfielder. Muller has always been underrated, regularly getting over 15 goal contributions per season, but never really getting any media attention.
Appointed as Bayern Boss in November 2019, Hans Dieter-Flick has done a fantastic job as Bayern manager. Since taking charge Hans Dieter-Flick has lost just two league games. A particular issue for Bayern under Niko Kovac, was the inability to keep clean sheets. Bayern have kept nine clean sheets in sixteen games since the appointment of Hans Dieter-Flick. However, Dieter-Flick has minimal experience as a head coach, could this be a factor if the title goes down to the wire?
Bayern have a challenging run in, their last five games include Bayer Leverkusen, Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg, could Wolfsburg cause an upset on the last day?
Borussia Dortmund, runners up in many of the recent Bundesliga campaigns, are favourites for second again this season. Current odds are 11/2 from the betway for Dortmund to pull off an absurd outcome, and win the title. The last time Dortmund won the Bundesliga was in the 2011/2012 season.
So far this season, Dortmund have fifty four points in twenty six matches, putting them in second place just four points behind Bayern Munich. Dortmund have no issues in the goalscoring department, with 72 goals in 26 matches.
However goals conceded is more of a concern for Dortmund, conceding thirty three goals in twenty six matches. Dortmund have an impressive home record, ranked first in the Bundesliga, having not lost at Westfalenstadion all season. Nonetheless the same can’t be said for Dortmund’s away record, Dortmund have lost four times in 13 matches on the road this season.
Dortmund are renowned for their prodigious young talents, and one of the most talked about in world football is Jadon Sancho. Twenty four games, 14 goals and 15 assists at just 20 years old, it’s fair to say the media attention he gets is adequate. Sancho has been linked with a return to England, more specifically Manchester United, with a market value of 100 million pounds, it will more than likely be Manchester United’s record transfer, if Sancho was to make a return.
Marco Reus has been a key player for Dortmund for what seems like an eternity. Reus signed for Dortmund in the summer of 2012 and in his time at the club has scored 139 goals in 290 games. This season Reus has been playing as an attacking midfielder, in previous seasons we’ve seen him play out wide. Eleven goals and five assists with an average match rating of 7.51 ranks him as the fifth most consistent performer in the Bundesliga. However unfortunately for Reus, countless injuries have led to his potential being nullified.
Dortmund have a manager with bags of experience in Lucien Farve. The 62-year-old’s management days date all the way back to 1993. Favre took charge of Dortmund in 2018 and has since won the DFL Supercup. In his time at Dortmund he’s been able to turn the Westfalenstadion into a fortress. Dortmund have begun to challenge for the title again in recent years, and with the arrival of many exciting signings, is this the season Dortmund reclaim the Bundesliga?
Dortmund’s last five games are all very much winnable. However a substantial tie falls on the 33rd game week as Dortmund take on RB Leipzig.
RB Leipzig were founded just eleven years ago, and in their short time as a football club we’ve seen them win promotion after promotion. Leipzig’s success comes with rather controversial circumstances as a considerable amount of that success comes from the funding from their sponsor, Red Bull.
RB Leipzig are yet to win the Bundesliga, the closest they’ve come was in the 2016/2017 season as they finished runners up. RB Leipzig are seen as more of a dark horse in this year’s competition, odds are currently 10/1 from Ladbrokes that they will win the title.
RB Leipzig are currently on 51 points after 26 games. Leipzig have seven wins in thirteen home matches this season and seven wins in thirteen games on the road, ranking them second in the division for away games. Leipzig have an outstanding defensive record conceding 27 goals in 26 games, second behind Bayern Munich.
Timo Werner has been phenomenal for Leipzig ever since joining in 2016. Werner has 89 goals in 153 games for Leipzig. This season Werner has 21 goals in 26 games as well as seven assists. At just twenty four years of age Werner is yet to reach his prime years, no doubt he will be a target for many of Europe’s top clubs approaching the next transfer window.
Julian Nagelsmann is one of the youngest managers in football, and possibly one of the most exciting manager prospects. At just 32 years of age Julian Nagelsmann was appointed as manager of Leipzig after a successful three year spell with Hoffenheim. Since taking charge, Nagelsmann has transformed Leipzig into a title contender. Not only that but reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League is a colossal achievement.
The one game in Leipzig’s run in that could be a title decider is Leipzig v Dortmund on June 20. If the title race did go down to the wire, Leipzig play Augsburg in the 34th gameweek, a game which you’d expect them to accumulate the three points.
Borussia Monchengladbach are a rather unlikely contender for this year’s Bundesliga titles, despite only being six points behind the current leaders, Bayern Munich. If Monchengladbach did pull off unimaginable and win the Bundesliga this season, it would be the first title win since 1977. Monchengladbach are currently 150/1 from Ladbrokes to win the Bundesliga this season, it’s fair to say a title win would raise a few eyebrows.
This season Monchengladbach have 52 points in 26 games. Gladbach have the third best home record in the Bundesliga, losing just twice at home this season. Gladbachs away record is similar, losing four games on the road this season, ranked third.
Explosive winger, Marcus Thuram has been in fine form for Gladbach this season. The Frenchman has seven goals and eight assists and an average match rating of 7.17. Thuram signed for Gladbach last summer, since then Thuram has scored 11 goals in 35 matches. At just 22 years of age, Thuram has a bright future ahead of him, will we see Thuram start for France in the future?
Another key player and another Frenchman, Alassane Plea has been excellent for Monchengladbach this season. Plea has nine goals and seven assists in twenty three matches. Plea is arguably Gladbachs most consistent performer with an average match rating of 7.23, the highest in the Gladbach squad. At 27 years of age Plea is in his prime years, can he make a name for himself in the title race this season?
Maro Rose has done an outstanding job since taking charge of Monchengladbach in July 2019. In recent times Gladbach have been in and out of the top ten, but never really challenging for the Champions League places. However Rose has changed that this season and has Gladbach competing for the Bundesliga again.
A key fixture in the title race could be Monchengladbach v Bayern Munich on June 13. Apart from that Gladbach have plenty of winnable games which could be a key factor in the title race this season.
