During the transfer deadline day, two clubs who were expected to be the busy were Arsenal and Liverpool. However this turned out not to be the case, with neither making a single move. Fans were left devastated.
So what could this mean for their hopes for the season ahead…?
Since the sale of club captain and star striker Robin Van Persie, Arsenal have been questioned by many regarding their ambitions. Even though Arsene Wenger has shown his support to summer signings Oliver Giroud and Lukas Podolski, matters on the pitch are yet to be resolved.
Many thought the goal crisis would be resolved on deadline day after theexit of Park and Bentner, but they bought no one. Last season with Van Persie scoring goals for fun, the main problem for the Gunners was at the back. Now, their defence is looking solid and their main problems are in front of goal, and they are yet to hit the net this season. Until Van Persie left, I had Arsenal as genuine title contenders; but now, unless Giroud or Podolski find form quickly, it could turn out to be a very long season for the club.
With Liverpool it is a different story. Like last season, they still just can’t seem to find the back of the net in open play. During the summer they sold many of their goal scoring forwards in Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodrigues and Craig Bellamy; and just bought in the young and inexperienced Fabio Borini. The situation became even worse with the loan of Andy Carroll to West Ham the day before deadline day, which gave them hardly any time to find a replacement. The club weren’t able to cough up £6million for Clint Dempsey (a proven Premier League goal scorer), and now go into the next few months with just two first team strikers, with only one of them proven in the division.
A lot depends on the Luis Suarez. As good as Suarez may be, he hasn’t proven to be prolific in front of goal in the Premier League. The Uruguayan is also very unpredictable as he is known for doing stupid things. What happens if, like last year, Suarez picks up a ban? Liverpool’s season will be in tatters. They can’t rely on person to score all the goals. They needed to get a striker on deadline day… They didn’t. Will they pay the price? We will have to wait and see…
