In terms of what Liverpool are after I don’t think there was a better choice out there. Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, what the club is after is not to win trophies and once more become a European force, but to guarantee against a catastrophic slide down the table while the owners and administrators try desperately to sell it.

Hodgson will ensure that there will be no major uprisings, controversies or anything else that can darken the club’s image but in terms of rejoining the big four, I don’t think he can do much.

So you believe LFC should have stuck with Rafa? Seriously? Did you miss last season or something?

Who else can they afford? He is the best man for the job. sell the big names, cash in, get the money, pay down some debt and use the rest for transfers.

Nice article, lots of good detail. Just a small point, don’t mean to be annoying… you keep using the word “sighted” – do you mean “cited”? Not sure I understand otherwise…

I think in the circumstances he is the best appointment we could make. We can’t afford to replace Rafa with a big name manager who has European success under his belt, especially after dishing out both compensation fees.

Hodgson won’t attract the big names – not that we can afford them, but you wouldn’t know about that now Neil? – but he should be able to bring some humility and stability to the club. Also, I’m hoping he’ll make better success of small buys, something Rafa failed miserably at. I’m not expecting top players to come out of a few million, but you never know, he might uncover a really useful player.

I think we’ll just about stay where we are at the moment, I can’t see us finishing out of the top six. As we sit and watch City buy,Tottenham and even Arsenal buy, there’s no chance we can compete and fight for a top four spot.

As a Manchester City fan, this is a fantastic appointment as far as we’re concerned.

Liverpool have spunked £8.5m to get rid of a young (in manager terms) Champions League winning gaffer, and in his place comes a 62 year old nomad.

Not only have they placed themselves further in the red with that stroke of genius, but they will also no doubt have to sell some of the current crop of players before the season starts. And the squad is already paper thin as it is.
