even if you weren’t watching that night, you’ve captured the significance of his performance beautifully.

one of the seminal striking performances of the 90s; perhaps of all time. the standing ovation merely put the icing on the preverbial cake.

slowly making my way through the series with great anticipation.

Thanks for the comment Marty. Here’s the line you’re referring to:

“Few teams strode into the Theatre of Dreams with an aura of arrogance and brilliance better than that of their hosts for the night.”

What I meant here is that Madrid were the team with the aura of arrogance and brilliance. What I’m trying to say is that it was a very rare sight to see a team come to Old Trafford expecting to play better than United (the hosts). Madrid were one of the rare exceptions, and yes, the first leg’s display was one of the big reasons why. Sorry if it that wasn’t clear upon first reading it.

Man Utd didn’t stride onto the Theatre of Dreams as conquerers “with an aura of arrogance and brillinace”; they’d just been walloped 3-1 at the Bernabeu. Juve then proved that Real themselves had massive holes in their game. Man Utd were good that year but they had a huge inferiority complex against Real in those days and never did particularly well in Europe from 2000-2006.

The CR7 MU team ws much better than those boys from 2003, less of an attacking force perhaps but they had more balls.

Excellent article Kevyn, top work! Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Perfectly illustrated one of the most fearsome striking performances ever seen. The guy was a beast, and it is a crying shame that his career has come to a premature end, left with legacy of obesity and failure. He had his problems, but I dare anyone to find a more lethal goalscorer to ever grace a football pitch.
