Manchester United have been heavily linked with Southampton centre half Jose Fonte, and may sell Marcos Rojo before the transfer window closes.
New Saints manager Claude Puel doesn’t believe that the rumours are having any impact on the defender’s performances, and the Portuguese has been offered a new contract to remain at St. Mary’s.
The two sides go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Friday night, and Puel believes that there is no coincidence with regard to the timing of the story.
There is no problem with Jose, it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United. There is a possibility that he may travel with us to Old Trafford.
But he is a very good professional and he has played well in training sessions this week and it is important to have Jose with us, I hope, for the United game.
Fonte, who was an integral part of the Portugal side that won the 2016 European Championships, is also believed to be on the radar of Arsenal.
The 32-year-old has been with Southampton since 2010 when the club was languishing in League One, and he was named captain in August 2014.
Rojo, meanwhile, is deemed surplus to requirements at United following some abject performances following his £16million move from Sporting Lisbon two years ago.
With Luke Shaw fully fit and the first choice left back, United boss Jose Mourinho would like an experienced centre back and is prepared to use Rojo as a makeweight for any deal.
