Real Madrid sign Mesut Ozil

by Eamonn Power

Real Madrid have this afternoon secured the signing of Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Ozil for a undisclosed fee .

The 21 year old German World Cup star, who had only one year left on his current deal with the German side, had been strongly linked with a move to English shores this summer with both Manchester United and Arsenal rumored to be interested however as time progressed it was the Spanish giants who became the frontrunners for his signature. An initial bid made by the club last Friday was rejected by Bremen but an agreement was reached earlier today which suited all parties involved.

A hot young talent, Ozil always seemed unlikely to pledge his future to his current employers and Bremen were apparently eager to cash in out their star now, rather than risk losing him for free in twelve months time.

Due to the short time left on his remaining contract, it is believed that Ozil was available this summer for a fee in the region of €10-15m.

He will undergo a medical at the Santiago Bernabéu later today.

A cracking signing for Real Madrid and already Mourinho looks like putting their ‘mighty’ millions to good use. £12.4 million (or whatever it is) is an absolute steal in today’s market when you consider Manchester City have parted with double that for a clearly inferior (yet still talented) player in James Milner.
