Premier League XI’s: Journeyman F.C.

by Eamonn Power

http://7travelers.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/web-suitcase.jpgIn the first of a new feature here on Backpage Football (and in the unlikely case that it needs explaining), I try to put together the best possible XI to have played in the Premier League according to a particular theme.

The end result each time is the best that I could think of over a relatively short space of time and I’m sure that they’re are far more obvious options out there, so if you think of any, feel free to stick their names in the comment box below.

For round one, I’m focusing on footballing journeymen. The rules are basic and as follows:

  • Each player must have featured prominently in the Premier League (or Premiership) at one stage of his career
  • Each player must have played for at least six clubs throughout his career, but not all must have been in the Premier League or even in England (I realize that six clubs may not constitute the title of a true journeyman, but if the average career lasts 18 years, a new club every 3 (on average) is pretty restless, plus its awfully hard to find any decent defenders with more)
  • Only standard formations allowed (no 2-3-5′s for example, strikers are always easier to think of for some reason)
  • Loan deals count
  • Where possible, try keep selections as recent as possible (in terms of playing career)
  • Focus is on quality and not total number of clubs (therefore no Ade Akinbiyi unfortunately), but where possible a balance should be found
  • Some extra credit given for globetrotting or particluarly greedy moves

Now that the housekeeping is out of the way, here’s what I came up with….. (actually a lot of credit must also go to my sister Áine, who  so generously took time from her intense work schedule to rack her brains for a few of these, most notably Darren Huckerby, that was a nice one)

Formation: 4-4-2

Manager: Terry Venables (Crystal Palace, QPR, Barcelona, Tottenham, England, Australia, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Leeds United)

So final selection:

James

Xavier            Stam           Lebouef        Kilbane

Huckerby     Bullard          Vieira         Bellamy

Anelka           Keane

A relatively strong side, 11 players with 82 different clubs (and a couple of returns).

Can you do any better?!

First one that comes to mind has to be Juan Sebastián Verón instead of Bullard. He has made 9 moves, now back at the team he began his career with.

Another obvious one for me is Andrei Kanchelskis instead of Huckerby (I mean Huckerby? Really?). 11 clubs including 5 british clubs should be more than enough to earn him the Journyman title.

  2. Eamonn Power Eamonn Power says:

Yea, 2 very good suggestions there, Veron instead of Bullard in particular. Like I said, I’m sure there’s plenty of options out there,

Might leave the comments go for a while and look at editing the final line-up then…..

  3. Aaron says:

DAVE BEASANT (14 Clubs: Edgware Town, Wimbledon, Newcastle, Chelsea, Grimsby, Wolves, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur, Bradford, Wigan, Brighton, Fulham)

ABEL XAVIER (12 Clubs) – couldn’t even get close on this one.

MICHAEL DUBERRY (7 Clubs: Chelsea, Bournemouth, Leeds, Stoke, Reading, Wycombe, St. Johnstone)

ROQUE JUNIOR (10 Clubs: Santarritense, Sao Jose, Palmeiras (twice), Milan, Leeds, Siena, Bayer Leverkusen, Duisburg, Al Rayyan, Ituano)

GREGORY VIGNAL (11 Clubs: Montpellier, Liverpool, Bastia, Rennes, Espanyol, Rangers, Porsmouth, Lens, Kaiserslautern, Southampton, Birmingham)

JERMAINE PENNANT (8 Clubs: Notts County, Arsenal, Watford, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Real Zaragoza)

NICK BARMBY (7 Clubs: Tottenham Hostpur, Middlesbrough, Everton, Liverpool, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Hull)

ROBBIE SAVAGE (7 Clubs: Man United, Crewe, Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn, Derby, Brighton)

LAURENT ROBERT (9 Clubs: Montpellier, PSG, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Benfica, Levante, Derby, Toronto, Larissa)

ANDY COLE (12 Clubs: Arsenal, Fulham (twice), Bristol City, Newcastle, Man United, Blackburn, Man City, Portsmouth, Brimingham, Sunderland, Burnley, Nottingham Forest)

CHRISTIAN VIERI (13 Clubs: Prato, Torino, Pisa, Ravenna, Venezia, Atalanta (three times), Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Monaco, Fiorentina.)

  4. Aaron says:

By the way…not a better XI than yours…just an alternative one ;)

  5. Buck Rogers says:

Mario Jardel is one that springs to mind, Big Sam brought him to Bolton, had a ridiculous goal scoring record in the lesser leagues of Europe! 17 clubs (Ferroviário, Vasco da Gama, Gremio, Porto, Galatasaray, Sporting CP, Bolton Wanderers, Newells Old Boys, Deportivio Alaves, Goiás, Beira-Mar, Anorthosis Famagusta, Newcastle Jets, Criciúma, Ferroviário, Flamengo-PI) Always a good lad to snatch up on Champo back in the day!

Morientes: 7 clubs (Albacete, Zaragoza, Real Madrid, Monaco (loan), Liverpool, Valencia, Marseille.)

Salif Diao: 8 clubs (AS Monaco, SAS Epinal (loan), CS Sedan Ardennes, Liverpool, Birmingham City (loan), Portsmouth (loan), Stoke City (loan), Stoke City.)

Robbie Fowler. One of the greatest strikers to ever pull on a Liverpool shirt but by the time he left for Leeds his best days were sadly behind him. The Premierships first superstar! 8 clubs (Liverpool,
Leeds, Manchester City, Liverpool, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, North Queensland Fury, Perth Glory)

Christian Daily: 7 clubs (Dundee United, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, Southampton (loan), Rangers, Charlton Athletic.)

Danny Mills: 8 clubs: (Norwich City, Charlton Athletic, Leeds United, Middlesbrough (loan), Manchester City, Hull City (loan), Charlton Athletic (loan), Derby County (loan).

Steve Finnan: 8 clubs (Welling United, Birmingham City, Notts County (loan), Notts County, Fulham, Liverpool, Espanyol, Portsmouth.)

  6. Eamonn Power Eamonn Power says:

    - Aaron, well done getting another full team out there (although i can’t remember Christian Vieri coming this side of the world at any stage in his career)! Gregory Vignal probably good enough to shade Kev Kilbane at LB

    - Buck, Some very good suggestions there. Thought of Fowler, was a wonderkid at L’pool but i felt the rest of his time in the league never lived up to his younger years and stuck with keane and anelka instead. Danny Mills and steve finnan other good shouts but Xavier got the nod for his sheer number of clubs and his trip to LA! Not sure if the rest of yer ideas are better than the alternatives though, but fair play for knocking out a few

  7. Buck Rogers says:

Ah knocked out Daily as the man is a bit of a legend never had an agent throughout his career, did all the wrangling himself!! Mentioned Diao as he’s played for 4 different English clubs despite been utter rubbish and when signed for the Pool in the words of Jamie Carragher Houllier promised us “a world class centre mid”!!!
