Tyrone Mears?! I know they're desperate but seriously? A product of the City youth academy who was just never good enough. Nothing's changed really.

Very harsh on Bridge also. I've watched every City game this season bar the League Cup and he has been excellent for the most part. Indeed, there were doubts amongst supporters at the start of the season following his performances last year but he has improved massively. Last weekend was a bit of a blip but he's a quality full back.

Ian - indeed, that's a whole other issue that I'm sure I, or one of the other bpf writers, will come to in good time!

Personally I think James is the man for the job until either Foster or Hart progress enough to oust him.

I agree that Tyrone Mears surely has to be called up soon, he deserves a run-out in a friendly.

Most of the England team have been underperforming at club level this season, apart from the regulars who usually excel.

I'm surprised that the goalkeeping issue hasn't been mentioned, but then again thats probably a whole other article. 'Who will be England No.1 at the World Cup?'

I believe David James is far surperior than Rob Green, I don't really rate Foster, and Hart is a bit young.

Anyone think it should be James as No.1?

Forgot about Leighton Baines, good shout. He'd be a good asset to have in the squad, has performed well for Everton over the last year and is a great crosser and setpiece taker.

I am disappointed in the lack of a mention for Arsenal (and England U21) left-back Kieran Gibbs. He has, or I've at least seen reports suggesting, been on Capello's radar recently and is getting a good run in Arsenal team at the moment with Gael Clichy's injury.

Despite his age he already has a lot of experience, he's played Champions League football for the Gunners (although he'll probably want to forget the semi-final against Man United last year). He's also versatile, and can play in midfield.

There's also no mention of Everton left-back Leighton Baines in this article, who has showed he has the qualities to at least be an understudy should Ashley Cole get injured.

I do agree that England are lacking in several top quality full-backs, and even Johnson & Cole have issues with the defensive part of the position.

I feel Capello will, like the article touches on, take versatile players like Hargreaves (if he's played enough) and Milner to the World Cup as cover.

And, even if Carragher was available I don't think he has - at least not so far this season - shown that he is still the defender he once was.

Tyrone Mears on current forum definitely deserves a call-up.

He's a permanent fixture in the Burnley squad. He has pace, a great final ball, great linkup play with the right wing and definitely has a busy task as part of the Burnley back four.

He's currently rated 2nd behind Johnson on the OPTA stats, why not give him a go in a friendly?
