As I rapidly approach 80 please excuse me for being a bit plankish but I have only just realised the colour of your tricolour. May I add this addendum:- Derby County’s very able young players Mike Hendrick and Mark O’brien will certainly enhance the Republics prowess when they play for Ireland, as they certainly will.

Disagree on the Shelvey point, he was the best player on the pitch against Mansfield, admittedly lower league opposition, but I couldn’t see Hughes even being that good for another year or two.

Either way, Hughes is the best player to come out of our academy in living memory for me. His attitude as pointed out in the article is the difference maker for him, not the fancy tricks like Barnes had – a skill rich, attitude poor player. Your attitude is key to being good at any job, sport or otherwise.

I am old enough to have watched Huddersfield Town, then managed by Bill Shankly, when they had a 17 year old wunderkind named Dennis Law. I tell you that Will Hughes is a better player than that talented guy was at the same age. Okay maybe I am comparing chalk and cheese but Will is that missing piece in any football clubs jig saw puzzle. As for England? Have we English got a player to enjoy in the future.

Great piece.

Hughes would have little problem getting into the team at Liverpool within the next few years. Gerrard is in his final years and Shelvey just isn’t very good.

As for price, £5mil rising to £8mil based on appearances, caps, etc. is most likely.
