One 2 Watch – Kevin Gameiro

by Josh Ilan

23 | Striker | Lorient | French

France and Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro is destined for a big move this summer, with the likes of Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur, PSG, Valencia and Arsenal linked to the striker.

Having started his career at Strasbourg, he signed for Lorient for a fee of £3 million pounds after Strasbourg got relegated to the French Second Division in 2008. In his first season for the Brittany club, he got 11 goals from 37 games as he helped lead the club to their highest ever finish in their history, tenth place. The next season though, he cemented his position as one of France’s best young strikers with 17 goals from 35 games as Lorient finished in seventh.

This season, his rise through French football to be one of France’s top strikers has been secured as his 20 goals and three assists this season have propelled Lorient to the sixth place in the league and possibly a place in Europe. He has also made himself a regular selection in the French national team, making three appearances for his country without scoring.

He is contracted until the summer of 2012 and with Gameiro refusing to sign a new deal with Lorient, the side risk losing him for nothing unless they sell him this summer. A bid of at least £12.5 million pounds would interest Lorient with time running out for them to sell.

Gameiro’s preferred move is to a Spanish side over a move to the English Premier League because he thinks that he could possibly be too small to make an impact there, while Spain would suit his style of play as a quick goal scorer with an impressive goal scoring ability, basically making himself sound like the French clone of David Villa.

This means that we should expect the striker to make a move to one of Valencia, Villareal and Sevilla in the summer. He is bound to make an impact wherever he goes and will probably be one of France’s main players in years  to come.
