One 2 Watch – Adnan Januzaj and Denis Suarez

by Sid Chaurasiya

Sid Chaurasiya looks at two youngsters hoping to make a name for themselves in Manchester this season.

Adnan Januzaj

18 | Midfielder | Manchester United | Belgian

A lot has been said of the United’s winger’s poor performances during the 2012/13 season, in spite of United winning the Premier League title comfortably. Along with the central midfield position, one area where United have to improve is the wings. If Valencia can reach the heights of his 2011-12 season, the United supporters will be kept happy, but there’s one other player who caught everyone’s eye when he was named on the bench for Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever match for United, Adnan Januzaj; a youngster tipped by many to be the next David Beckham.

Adnan spent his early youth career with Anderlecht, but it wasn’t long before scouts from all over the world saw this upcoming talent. Elite clubs like Barcelona and United showed very keen interest in signing him, but it was the Premier League champions who won this race. The fee was believed to be around £300,000.

Adnan primarily plays on the right side even though he is left footed. He can also play centrally or on the left side. He is very well known for his skills, creativity and most impressively, his calmness in possession. His dribbling qualities are exceptional, and there are no doubts that he can be a creative spark for United in the coming years.

Technically, he is sound for his age and is blessed with very good balance; this coupled with his pace makes him a very talented dribbler. He has a delicate frame but it shouldn’t be problem since he is still very young. The trait which has drawn most comparisons to Beckham, is his superb set piece ability. His awareness is excellent and thrives on empty spaces. He has great vision and his first touch and ball control are very decent too.

New manager, David Moyes rates him highly and it was evident why when he put in a dazzling performance against Singha All Star XI.

He had a wonderful 2012-13 season with scoring once and assisting 4 in 19 games for the U21 reserves and, not surprisingly, he won the Manchester United’s Reserve Team Player of the Year award at the age of 18.

Its fairly safe to say Januzaj will take the Premier League by storm in few years time.

Denis Suarez

19 | Midfielder | Manchester City | Spanish

City supporters have had high hopes for Denis Suarez since his move from Celta Vigo. Elite clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea and rivals Manchester United were interested in signing him, but in the end City signed him for £850,000 with future add ons in the future based on his performance and appearances. Since the move,Suarez Has made massive strides forward and is now considered as one of City’s brightest talents. In his own words, Suarez prefers playing in a more central role but he is also very accomplished out wide. Suarez’s playing style is similar to that of his City teammate, David Silva. In fact Suarez has been tipped to be the heir to Silva at City.

Denis Suarez has two quick feet, and can wriggle through a group of players without breaking a sweat. Suarez tends to play centrally and drop deep behind the striker in a number 10 position during a game. Suarez has a range of passes and has an excellent vision to execute them as well. Also it should be noted Suarez is very confident in possession and rarely looks clumsy with the ball at his feet. Like most of the Spanish midfielders, Suarez possesses that elegant feel to his playing style. However, one quality which is often overlooked is a player tracking back and surprisingly enough Suarez tracks back very well. It’s difficult to differentiate if its Silva himself when Denis is in full flow, his square passes and layoffs are almost Silva-esque.

One of the drawback of his game is his concentration. There were times when Suarez looked uninterested in the EDS games(maybe because he thinks he is ready for the next level?). Like his U20 teammate Deulofeu,Suarez tends to get annoyed when not seeing much of the ball. Even though he looks composed on the ball, He gets dispossessed often; but at the tender age of 19, there’s plenty of time to improve.

He was a part of the Spanish team in the recent U20 World Cup. Even though he started only once in the tournament, he made his mark against Mexico, His cameo appearance against them earned plaudits from all around the world. Denis played in both the pre season friendlies for City. In his 45 mins appearance against SuperSports, most of his passes were spot on and tracked back very well., He was very lively. He didn’t had much to do against Amazulu where he played in the last 20 mins or so.

His frame is fragile and he may not be ready for the rigors of Premier League yet, and with the abundance of midfielders that City currently have, Denis may not get much of the playing time except for the League Cup games and few starts in the Premier League. A loan spell to a Spanish Club, possibly to his former Club Celta Vigo will be beneficial for all the parties.
