Newcastle announce signings of Ritchie and Gayle

Newcastle United’s preparations for life in the Championship are underway with the signings of Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle.

The moves came on the same day that Andros Townsend ended his short spell with the club by completing a £13 million switch to Crystal Palace.

Scottish international Ritchie drops down a division after being a key part of Bournemouth’s rise to the Premier League over the past couple of seasons.

While the fee for the 26-year-old is listed as undisclosed, it is believed to be in the region of £12 million.

I loved it at Bournemouth – I had a fantastic time there and it had a huge impact on my career. But when a club like Newcastle comes calling, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity.

It’s fantastic to be here and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of getting the club back in the Premier League.

– Matt Ritchie

Meanwhile, Gayle has inked a five-year deal at St. James’ Park having cost the club £10 million to acquire from Crystal Palace.

A former non-league footballer with Stansted, 25-year-old Gayle only played in 16 of Palace’s league games last season, down from 25 in the previous campaign.

Signing two players with Premier League pedigrees for eight figure sums is a clear indication of manager Rafa Benitez’s desire to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.
