Moments of Magic heads to Serie A this week to relive Youri Djorkaeff’s stunning scissors kick against Roma at the San Siro in 1997.
#11 Youri Djorkaeff v Roma, 1997
With superb vision and an eye for goal, former French international Youri Djorkaeff was a joy to watch during a career that took him from Ligue 1 right through to the MLS via Serie A, the Bundesliga and the Premiership.
A World Cup and European Championship winner at international level, there are very few people within the game who would have a bad word to say against the former Inter and Bolton forward.
After humble beginnings with Grenoble as a 16 year old, Djorkaeff rose to promise in the early 1990s when he moved to Monaco.
He enjoyed a brief spell at Paris St. Germain before heading to Italy to join Inter in 1996, and bagged 14 goals in his first full season at the club.
His goal against Roma on May 5th, 1997, typified his ability. A shot from the edge of the penalty area was only parried by goalkeeper Giorgio Sterchele and half cleared up into the air.
As the ball dropped on an acute angle, Djorkaeff threw himself into the air to connect with a perfect bicylce kick to send an effort into the roof of the net.
Inter went on to finish in third place that season and qualified for the Uefa Cup, a competition that they would go on to win in 1998.
Djorkaeff left Inter in 1999 after three seasons and headed to Germany to play with Kaiserslautern.
A move to the Premiership with Bolton came unexpectadly in 2002 and he was a huge hit with the fans, scoring twenty goals in 75 games at the Reebok Stadium.
Djorkaeff decided to call it a day in 2006 after a spell in the MLS as the marquee player with the New York Red Bulls.
