Liverpool set to spend £10m on a player who won’t play this season

No, not Alberto Aquilani.

According to the Independent, Liverpool are set to sign Derby County youngster Will Hughes for £10million. The highly rated 18-year-old will then be loaned back to the Rams for the season.

In a deal not too dissimilar to Manchester Utd’s signing of Wilfried Zaha, Liverpool fans will be able to keep an eye out for the England U-21 international in the Championship, as Derby look to seek promotion into the top flight.

Hughes has been watched extensively over the last six months by Liverpool’s chief scout, Barry Hunter. The teenager’s performances have merited the attention of all the leading Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Arsenal, but it is Liverpool who are prepared to pay the premium price for an English talent and leave him at his current club to develop for another year.
