Liverpool are keen to bolster their attacking options by completing a deal to bring Georginio Wijnaldum to Anfield.
Despite Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez’s reluctance to sell, reports suggest that a bid of around £20 million could be too hard to resist.
Benitez knows Liverpool well from his spell in charge and could demand a player exchange deal, with Lucas Leiva and Jon Flanagan on the wanted list.
The 25-year-old moved to Newcastle only last summer for £14.5 million. Newcastle have set a fee of £27 million, but Liverpool are confident they can settle on a deal nearer to £20 million and there is some optimism on Merseyside that talks could advance significantly over the next few days.
Dutch international Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in 38 games for Newcastle in the Premier League last season, a number that made him the relegated club’s top scorer.
