King jailed for 18 months

Sports - December 08, 2007

Wigan Athletic striker Marlon King has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a female in a London bar last December.

The 29 year old was out celebrating his wife’s pregnancy when he reacted angrily to rejection from a 20 year old girl, punching her in the face and knocking her to the ground.

Wigan have torn up the player’s contract, with club chairman Dave Whelan reacting angrily to the news.

“He is absolutely sacked,” said Whelan. “We will not tolerate football players who get sent to jail for 18 months.”

“As far as we are concerned, he is finished with football at Wigan Athletic.”

It was revealed during the trial that King has long standing criminal record for a number of offences, including previous threatening behaviour towards women.
