Injury blow for Liverpool defender

Liverpool’s recent signing Sotiris Kyrgiakos is set to be ruled out for a substantial period of time after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Greece last night.

The 30 year old defender left the field just before half time in his country’s 2-1 win over Luxembourg and was rushed straight to hospital for an MRI scan.

Early reports from Greece suggest that Kyrgiakos has ruptured in anterior cruciate ligament and could be out for up to six months.

Liverpool have been short of cover for Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel at centre half lately, though Daniel Agger came through two games for Denmark this week.

The news of Kyrgiakos’ injury is also a blow for Greece who have qualified for the European playoffs that will take place on November 14 and 18.
