High hopes of Italian glory for Napoli

So far this season in the Serie A, there has been several highly impressive team performances coming from the highly renowned Italian footballing giants, alongside a few surprise starts to the campaign from teams such as Sassuolo who find themselves in fifth place, and Fiorentina who have been very good so far this season, currently in third place place behind Napoli and league leaders Roma.

However, if there is one team that has been showing just how good they are this season; it’s Napoli. Maurizio Sarri’s men have been in fine form, both in their domestic campaign and in the Europa League, winning every single European game they have been faced with.

Having played 10 games so far in the Serie A, the Partenopei find themselves in second place, with 21 points. After The Blues got off to a fairly slow start this season, losing 2-1 to the surprise package so far, Sassuolo; they have been in fine, unbeaten form.

So far this season, Napoli have achieved the highest home victory, hammering Lazio 5-0 in a completely dominant display, as well as the highest away victory so far, beating AC Milan 4-0 at the San Siro.

In the last couple of weeks, Napoli racked up their third win out of three games in the Europa League, dominating Danish champions, FC Midtjylland 4-1 away from home, thanks to a brace from Manolo Gabbiadini, a goal from Jose Callejon and a late strike from Gonzalo Higuain to keep Napoli at the very top of Group D.

Alongside their unstoppable European form, however, Napoli have enjoyed some excellent results so far in the Serie A

Two weeks ago, league leaders Fiorentina were yet another Italian side to be put to the sword by Sarri’s team, as Napoli ran out as 2-1 winners after a 75th minute goal from the free-scoring Gonzalo Higuain.

Not only does this show just how powerful Napoli are as the new season sets out, but it shows that they can handle all the pressure that this league has to throw at them, pushing aside the impressive Fiorentina, and also battering AC Milan in their own back yard a couple of weeks back 4-0, as well as beating reigning champions Juventus 2-1. In their last game, also, Napoli continued their winning ways.

On Wednesday, Maurizio Sarri’s men saw off the challenging performance Palermo with a crucial 2-0 win thanks to yet another goal from Gonzalo Higuain and a goal from Dries Mertens.

After such a good start, it is quite simply shocking that Napoli find themselves trailing Roma in the race for the title. However, this is a good example of just how tough the Serie A really is, and how competitive this season in prospect will be, with everyone fighting hard to achieve the best possible success this season.

Taking into consideration the wealth of talent that Napoli have within their squad, and their highly impressive start; the target for this season should be the Italian title.

It is safe to say that a huge Serie A win for Napoli would be long overdue, given that their last title win was in the season of 1989-90. Although it will be a big ask of The Blues, they have more than enough firepower in their side to fire them to glory.

One of these players that Napoli will need a big season from is the ever dangerous, Lorenzo Insigne. The creative forward has already bagged six goals for his side this season, whilst also setting up three for his team-mates.

Insigne’s talent on the ball has been a joy to watch so far, with his inventiveness and creativity shining through in Napoli’s excellent performances so far.

One performance in particular that was nothing short of sensational from Insigne was in Napoli’s rampant 4-0 victory at the San Siro, against AC Milan. Insigne, 24, scored two well worked goals and managed to get an assist for midfielder Allan, who opened the scoring in the tie.

If Insigne can maintain this level of performance, goals will come even more frequently for Napoli and they can look forward to a highly successful season.

Another player that will need to be on top form for Napoli this campaign is the globally known, world-class finisher, Gonzalo Higuain. In 10 Serie A appearances so far for Sarri’s team, Higuain too has bagged eight goals, whilst creating two for his team-mates.

Higuain has hit the back of the net in his last four consecutive games, which says a lot about just how good he is given the fact that he has scored 8 goals already, there is plenty of time for the Argentinian goal machine to improve his tally for the season.

He is the joint top scorer in the league alongside Sampdoria’s Eder, who has also found the net eight times for his side this season. Higuain had an absolutely sensational performance against reigning champions Juventus in his side’s 2-1 victory, bagging an assist and a crucial winner.

Higuain, 27, is widely regarded as the Serie A’s best striker, and if the powerful finisher can live up to this name and continue to score goals for Napoli, they stand a huge chance of success this season.

On the other side of the pitch, French centre half Kalidou Koulibaly will also need to have a good season, and possibly his best yet.

In the summer, there was strong talk of a move away from the Stadio San Paolo, with Premier League clubs such as Norwich City and Southampton circling for the powerful defender; however he opted to stay with Napoli.

The 6ft 5ins centre back has featured seven times in the Serie A for his club this season, but has already showed just how pivotal he will be to their chances this campaign.

Towering and dominant performances will be needed from Koulibaly for Napoli this season, as the talent and class of Serie A strikers will test Koulibaly’s resolve and class.

At the age of just 24 though, the defender has time to improve and to show his worth this season as he will hope to keep the goals out for his side and lead them to a successful campaign.

Napoli will hope to fight off tough competition from the rest of the teams in the Serie A, but know it will be a huge ask to win the league; but one they are more than capable of achieving.
