The Dubliner is the organisation’s first-ever Irish born World Heavyweight Champion, but when he’s not giving his opponents ‘the brogue kick’ he keeps an eye on the Irish football team, and had this message for Giovanni Trappatoni’s men.
“They have to give it everything against the Austrians, especially if we are to close in on Germany” the SmackDown star told FourFourTwo. “We can beat them, we just need to go out there and bring the game to them like we know we can. But as long as they play with their hearts, play with commitment, then win lose or draw they can leave the pitch with their heads held high.”
It’s the kind of Celtic warrior led speech that Ireland could have done with during their last tournament run, Euro 2012 – a finals which didn’t please the man who will team with Randy Orton and the Big Show to face The Shield at WrestleMania 29 on April 7th.
“I was a bit disappointed with the performances at the Euros, for me they let their heads drop and didn’t quite give it everything they had. The fans though were as amazing as always, hats off to the Irish crows because they made noise no matter what. It be great to get a result tomorrow to give something back to those fans.”
The ‘Great White’ as he’s nicknamed in the WWE, is not only a big fan of Traps men but a die-hard Liverpool supporter too. So does he think any of the Reds players could make it in the crazy world of professional wrestling?
“Maybe Gerrard,” he added. “He’s got so much heart, and always wears it on his sleeve. To be honest I think he’ll be good at anything he does, as he’s such a committed guy and athlete. If I were to pick a WWE star to play for Liverpool though, I’d go with Ryback, he’s a big fella and be great as a centre-back or in midfield. A bit like a modern day Steve McMahon or Vinnie Jones, a real hardman with that intimidation factor - I miss that about modern day football.”
