* Javier Garrido was actually sold to Lazio last summer so we’ve no idea what he’s doing on the list!

Our XI (not including players who have retired or signed for other clubs already):

GK: Marcus Hahnemann – American keepers last for years (see Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller) so based on that, Hahnemann should be good for another season or two.

DR: Joey O’Brien – A fantastic prospect as a teenager, O’Brien was struck down with injury and played just a handful of games for Bolton over the past few years. Still only 25, a fully fit O’Brien would be an asset to any club and also to the Republic of Ireland setup.

DL: Jonathan Spector – Having seen how crap Danny Gabbidon was when played at left back for West Ham this season we’ve opted for a natural full back, albeit a right footed one. The former Manchester United man could do a solid job though.

DC: Matthew Upson – Sure he’s a bit injury prone but there’s no denying that Upson is a very good defender with international experience.

DC: Jonathan Woodgate – See above. Woodgate was superb as a youngster at Leeds and you have to feel sorry for any player who has what could’ve been an outstanding career decimated by injury.

MR: Zoltan Gera – Huge fan of the Hungarian who helped himself to a tidy hattrick against Werder Bremen in the Europa League back in August. Should definitely find himself at another top flight club, whether in England or otherwise.

ML: Sebastian Larsson – Only just turned 26, Larsson is deadly on his day and is a good man for firing in a free kick. Clubs will be forming an orderly queue.

MC: Patrick Vieira – Proved to be a valuable asset to Manchester City at the end of the season and showed he still had the legs for top level football, particularly in the cup competitions. Would be a great figure to have around any club. Nigel Reo-Coker might be a decent alternative if the Frenchman’s legs don’t last.

MC: Owen Hargreaves – We’d be brave and take a punt on him. Sure we might end up regretting it but there’s not much to lose in a ‘pay as you play’ deal, especially if he could even string 20 games a season together. If it goes tits up we’d have Lee Bowyer as a back up to call on.

AMC: Andy Reid – Play him in the hole where he doesn’t have to run much and can ping the ball around at will.

ST: John Carew – We’re still clinging on to images of him turning Real Madrid inside out while at Valencia all those years ago. Plus the list isn’t exactly flush with top rate forwards.

  1. Probably would’ve picked Gudjohnsen up front and McFadden instead of Andy Reid as he might move a fraction more (only a fraction mind!) but otherwise wouldn’t argue too much with that team selection. Plenty of possibilities for those willing to take a risk. Zoltan Gera looks like a winner to me though as he’d add creativity and goals to plenty of mid-table sides’ midfields.
