Fan Focus: Swansea

Today we grill Swansea City fan Kevin Elphick, the man behind Swansea’s Vital Football website. After gaining promotion via the play-offs last season, they’ll be hoping for survival this year and not to go the way of Blackpool.

What is your greatest hope for the season ahead

Realistically, just finishing above the relegation zone. That would be amazing.

And your biggest fear

Getting relegated before the season has even finished.

Thoughts on the club’s summer transfer business

Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen all areas of the squad, and after three signings so far (Moreira, Caulker & Graham), I still believe we need another three or four at least. 1 player in each position.

Who’ll be your most important player this season

Danny Graham, our record £3.5m signing, I think he’ll have to perform and get us the bulk of our goals to help us avoid relegation.

And who’s the fan favourite

The most loyal would be Alan Tate. Then there’s Nathan Dyer for being our best player last season closely followed by Scott Sinclair, not forgetting our captain Garry Monk.

Anyone knew who we should keep an eye out for

Ferrie Bodde. The Dutch midfielder has been out with a knee injury for almost three years so he’ll be relatively unknown in the Premiership, but Swansea City fans are well aware of his quality and he’s good enough to shine in the top flight and get plenty of attention. We just hope he can get back to his best, and score more goals from 30 or 40 yards as he used to!

The player you’d pay his taxi fee to his new club

There’s a few but I have to mention Tom Butler for getting a new 1 year contract this Summer. He didn’t play a single game last season due to injury and before that he was mainly an unused substitute. Not good enough at Championship quality, but Rodgers is giving him a chance as he hasn’t seen him play yet. I think it’s a waste of wages.

Who do you want to beat most this season?

The teams that also got promoted from the Championship. That’ll be most important for us to avoid relegation.

Opposition players you admire and you despise?

For footballing reasons only, Ryan Giggs, I’ve been a fan ever since I was a small child but his recent behaviour outside of football is shameful to say the least. Also Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Javier Hernandez to name a small few in a league full of excellent players. Players I despise, the main one being Ashley Cole, for his on and off the pitch antics, I just dislike him! And Drogba, his attitude on the pitch isn’t appealing either, and I can’t forget Joey Barton either.

Have you got the right manager, and what advice would you give him?

We’ve definitely got the right manager and he’s got the whole of Swansea right behind him ahead of the new Premier League season. Giving Brendan Rodgers advice is hard considering right now it seems he can do no wrong after doing the unthinkable and getting us promoted in his first season. I just hope he strengthens the team enough and we have enough strength in depth to cope for what will be such a difficult season against top class sides.

And finally, where will you finish?

17th, got to stay positive!
