Fan Focus: Arsenal

by Kevin Coleman

The new season is just around the corner, and who better to invite in and see what’s happening then the fans themselves? Today, Andrew of legendary Arsenal blog Arseblog called in for a chat on the season ahead, defensive frailties and John Terry…

What is your greatest hope for the season ahead…

That the defensive weakness we have will be sorted out and the team overcomes what’s clearly a mental hurdle. When the pressure’s on, they find ever more exasperating ways to fuck things up.

And your biggest fear…

That the defensive weakness we have won’t be sorted out and the team fails overcomes what’s clearly a mental hurdle etc… etc…

Thoughts on the club’s summer transfer business…

So far, not much. The Cesc situation has been allowed drag on too long, I don’t understand a club as parsimonious as Arsenal refusing £20m+ for a player in the final year of his contract, and so far we’ve only signed Gervinho and Carl Jenkinson from Charlton who has a big step up to make.

The defence has not been strengthened, in fact, with the departure of Clichy, it’s probably weaker. Of course there’s still time but as of this moment in time I’m rather underwhelmed.

Who’ll be your most important player this season…

If he stays, Cesc. If not Robin van Persie.

And who’s the fan favourite…

Again, van Persie. It’s hard not to love him after his goal glut last season. If he can stay fully fit for the duration of the campaign he’s good enough to do it again.

Anyone knew who we should keep an eye out for…

Hard to see any youngsters making the breakthrough this season. Wilshere was an obvious choice last season but there’s nobody of that quality bubbling under this time around. Maybe Aaron Ramsey, although not new, will get a chance to show what he’s made of.

The player you’d pay his taxi fee to his new club…

Squillaci, and Eboue can ride for free too.

Who do you want to beat most this season…

Everyone.

Opposition players you admire and you despise…

I’m hugely partisan so I won’t admit admiration for anyone, even though there are plenty I’d have in the Arsenal team. And despise, all of them, but above them all, head and shoulders, the king of cunts, John Terry.

Have you got the right manager, and what advice would you give him…

I’m unsure if we have the right manager any more. The advice I’d give him now is ‘buy some better players. Quickly’.

And finally, where will you finish…

Top four, probably. Nowhere near champions without significant investment in the squad.
