FA Cup – Second qualifying round

by Stephen Fallows

The FA Cup Second Round Qualifying recently played out with my team to follow on the road to Wembley Tadcaster Albion continue their decent cup run with a 4-1 win at home to their opponents Skelmersdale United, who play their football at a higher level. Steve Jeff scored an early penalty to set the home side on their way, which was added to by a hat trick from Ward, who had earlier won the penalty for the opening goal. Skelmersdale briefly got back into the game, but Tadcaster held on for an impressive win and set up another home tie against Boston United in the next round.

Brentwood Town and Maldon & Tiptree managed an epic encounter over two games, with Brentwood finally coming out on top 9-8 on penalties, the shoot out which I followed almost live on twitter thanks to @TheRealFACup account. The biggest wins in the round came from FC Halifax beating Abbey Hey 6-0 at home which included a brace from Dale Johnson. Maidstone left it late to come through their tie against Grays, but then managed to score five in the last quarter to see off their hosts.

At this stage in the FA Cup, attendances can vary as the bigger teams and former Conference teams come up against much smaller teams. This is proved with the difference between the 1298 who saw the local derby between Salford and FC United (which United managed to win 3-2) compared to the 78 who saw Carlton squeeze past New Mills 4-3 to qualify for the next round.

In the other games I followed from the previous round. Bradford Park Avenue and  Frickley both qualified for the next round by beating Curzon Ashton and Chorley respectively by the same 3-1 scoreline. Cambridge City also managed a 3-1 win over Grantham. AFC Totton and Boston also made it through to the next round.

The draw for the third qualifying round sees £7,500 prize money for the winners and a step closer to a tie against a League One or Two club in the first round proper. The ties worth keeping an eye out for are:

Tadcaster Albion vs Boston United

FC Chester vs FC Halifax

FC United of Manchester vs Kendal Town

Carlton Town vs Bradford Park Avenue

Harrogate Town vs Frickley Athletic

Cambridge City vs Billeracy Town

Sholing vs Blackfield & Langley

AFC Totton vs Merthyr Town
