Donovan in line for Toffess switch

MLS Cup - Los Angeles Galaxy v Real Salt Lake

Major League Soccer’s MVP for 2009 Landon Donovan has agreed in principle to move to Everton in January on a two and a half month loan deal.

The 27 year old LA Galaxy star is looking to keep his match fitness ahead of next summer’s World Cup and a move to the Premiership would be ideal.

“You want to go where you are wanted,” said Donovan.

“Everton have been incredibly professional and expressed their interest and I feel that is a place where I would feel very comfortable.

“There’s already a lot of Americans that play (in the Premier League) and it would be interesting, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Donovan has agreed to stay with the Galaxy until 2013 but the temporary move to Goodison Park is similar to David Beckham’s switch to AC Milan.

“A finalised deal is not too far away,” said Everton chief executive Robert Elstone.

“Positive discussions have been ongoing and we expect to have Landon join the club when the transfer window opens.”

Donovan has scored 42 times in 120 internationals for the United States, making him the country’s all time leading goalscorer.
