In most countries the DF can be the making or breaking of a club. Too often loyalty to a long serving manager destroys the role (and club) when he is kicked upstairs, thus strangling any hope for a new/younger coach coming in. Football is so temporary and so result driven that it is the exception rather than the rule which sees the DF succeed. WBA are one exception. It will only work when the owner(s) of the club fully inform the fans of the plan, state clearly the intentions and then get the project rolling. On a small form the appointment by AEK Larnaca of Jordi Cruyff is one example (profitable) of this. It can work on such scales in Ireland though the money is barely there for a full-time coach let alone a full time DF.

As an Albion fan I know the Director of Football of football role works but it only works when there is a long term plan and the owner has the guts to stick to the plan regardless of the short term sucess or failure on the pitch.
