CHELSEA V MANCHESER UNITED

Chelsea have beaten Manchester United this afternoon in the FA Community Shield, Solomon Kalou putting away the winning penalty after the game finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.

United started the better of the two, but Chelsea came close early on as Ivanovic saw a header cleared off the line and onto the crossbar by Patrice Evra.

However it was the impressive link along the left of Evra and Nani that did the damage after ten minutes. Evra provided a perfect dummy past Nani to take the attentions of Essien and Ivanovic, the Portuguese midfield turned into his right and hit a sweet strike between Petr Cech and John Terry.

United came close again six minutes later, a lofted cross from Berbatov found Wayne Rooney at the far post, who headed the ball back across the box to find Ji Sung Park whose scuffed volley was saved well by Cech.

With Edwin van der Sar out injured until September, it was Ben Foster’s time to impress between the sticks but let himself down on more than one occasion, thanks to poor control from pass-backs and Chelsea’s swift pressure.

Nicholas Anelka came close again for Chelsea before half time, fizzing a low shot from outside the box but it went inches past the post.

Chelsea struck first after half time with an equaliser from Ricardo Carvalho. The Portuguese international, who was later named Man of the Match, headed home after Foster could only get fingertips to Anelka’s cross from the corner of the box.

After some wholesale changes, Chelsea took the lead thanks to Frank Lampard. Michael Ballack clearly bodychecked Evra on the flank, however referee Chris Foy waved play on as Chelsea broke forward. Drogba found Lampard whose shot was half saved by Foster but there was enough venom in the strike for the ball to cross the line.

Wayne Rooney scored a late equaliser, latching onto Ryan Giggs’ through ball in the 91st minute to cooly slot it past Petr Cech. There was more than a hint of offside about the goal as Rooney got in behind the Chelsea back four.

The game went straight into penalties after full time….

  • Lampard scores – 1-0  – burying it down the centre.
  • Giggs misses – 1-0 – Cech gets down to stop the Welshman with his legs.
  • Ballack scores - 2-0 – Fizzed the ball into the left corner.
  • Carrick scores – 2-1 – Nice penalty, power and placement.
  • Drogba scores – 3-1 – Low and hard.
  • Evra misses – 3-1 – Poor penalty caught by Cech.
  • Kalou scored – 4-1 – buries it into the roof of the net.

A competitive curtain raiser. I was surprised at how dominate United were in the first half. Second half, Chelsea upped their game and they looked in control. Having said that, it was two soft goals for United to give away. Foster looks very shaky, it will be interesting to see if he starts next week.

Chelsea deserved the win. United always have an excuse when they lose ^^, They can never hold their hand up and say ‘ok we lost, we’ll improve for next time’.

In this case, the controversy surrounding the second goal is ridiculous because it was United themselves who played on initially, How then can they accuse Chelsea of having an unfair advantage for not putting the ball out of play when Utd lost the ball. Madness.
