Can anyone catch Liverpool?

It’s been a stunning season so far for Liverpool: qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League and Club World Cup in the trophy cabinet at Anfield.

Now all that’s left is the not so small matter of the Premier League festive period.

The Reds currently have a ten-point lead over second place and hold a game in hand over the teams in second and third, and the question now is – can anyone catch Liverpool?

What was once considered a two-horse race is now between three teams, with this season’s surprise package Leicester City and reigning champions Manchester City breathing down Liverpool’s neck. So can either catch Liverpool?

Leicester City

Of all the teams that looked likely to win the league this season, very few considered Leicester to be genuine contenders.

But Brendan Rodgers has transformed this side into a title contender despite the sale of their apparent best centre back.

Harry Maguire’s move to Man Utd looked to be a good bit of business by the Old Trafford club, but on current form it’s clear that Leicester got the better end of that deal.

The impressive centre back pairing of Jonny Evans and Çaglar Söyüncü have helped the club storm up the league and take everyone by surprise.

Of course, they’re helped in no small part by the rejuvenated Jamie Vardy up front.

Vardy’s form so far this season has been nothing short of phenomenal. The fact that he’s touching the ball less but scoring more makes him one of the best players to bet on every weekend.

In fact, it’s hard to find football tips or accas that don’t feature the 32-year-old.

Despite the stumble against Manchester City, the Foxes still look good at the back and could be the ones to catch Liverpool should they falter.

Unfortunately, they rely a little too heavily on Vardy and with Rodgers’ admission that he will need to rest the striker, they may not have the supporting firepower to catch the Reds.

Manchester City

They’re finally starting to regain some form and although City still look shaky at the back, the resurgent Kevin De Bruyne will make them a danger to any team they face.

But this City side is a different beast to the side that won last season with a record points haul. They seem to have lost that swagger that they once had and the air of invincibility has evaporated.

Last season, it seemed that opposing managers had often accepted defeat before a ball was kicked. Damage limitation was the name of the game and this allowed City to rule the midfield unchallenged.

Things are different now and with everyone having a proper crack at Pep’s side, there are no certain three-pointers.

Having said that, they’re still the favourites to catch Liverpool if the Reds suffer from their usual mid-season dip in form. And speaking of which.

Can the Reds keep up the incredible form through the season? If history tells us anything it’s that January is a bad month for Liverpool.

And with December bringing so many games in such a short period of time, it’s likely that Klopp will need to rest some players coming into the new year.

The FA Cup tie against Everton is one that the club’s supporters will not want to lose, but we’re thinking that Klopp will have his eyes firmly on the Premier League.

He may not send out the kids like he did against Aston Villa, but he will certainly not want to push his first-team regulars too hard.

It’s hard to imagine that Liverpool will drop ten points over the next few months, while Leicester or City get three points in every match. But then again, stranger things have happened.

Whatever happens in the coming months, it will certainly be an intriguing season.

Whether it’s Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years, or a complete meltdown that hands the title to Leicester or City, one thing is sure – it’s going to be memorable.
