Newport County’s 4-3 opening day victory over Mansfield and Tuesdays 4-0 rout over Nuneaton ensured the Welsh Team ended the first week of the new season on top of the table, leading Stockport County on goal difference after the Hatters slender victories over Alfreton and away at Grimsby Town meant those teams held an early two point advantage over the chasing teams.
Behind the top two their are seven teams (Gateshead, Luton Town, Tamworth, Hereford United, Braintree Town, Cambridge United and Forest Green Rovers) still unbeaten and tied on four points after a win and a draw so far. Gateshead and Luton seem the most likely from this group to stay at the top end of the table, Luton looking to be promoted without the need for the play offs this year. Immediately below them are Macclesfield Town Ebbsfleet United, Wrexham, Lincoln City and Woking with a win and a draw from their opening weekend.
Southport, Hyde United and Barrow have drawn both their games so far, whilst Afreton Town, Grimsby Town and AFC Telford United have managed to pick up just the one point from their two games so far. Even though the season is young and there are plenty of points to be won, these teams could do with a morale boosting win to push them well up the table, otherwise, like Bath City last year, the longer it takes to come, it could already be too late when you do hit some form. The team with most concern would be Barrow, who have seen two goalless draws so far, and having signed several players just before the start of the season, it could take a while for the squad to gel.
The four relegation places are currently being filled by the only four teams that have so far failed to pick up any points. New boys Dartford and Nuneaton Borough are joined by Kidderminster Harriers and Mansfield Town, although their will be plenty of to-ing and fro-ing along the way over the next nine months.
So far three players have been equally prolific and scored three goals in their opening weekend. Adam Cunnington of Tamworth, Luton’s Stuart Fleetwood and Aaron O Conner of Newport County have shot to the top of the goalscorers list.
