Bizarre transfer story of the day – Joe Allen to Manchester United

by Up Front

Thankfully, silly season is nearly over, but the Daily Star has given us an absolute gem this morning with an ‘EXCLUSIVE’ linking Joe Allen to Manchester United.

The newspaper claims that Louis van Gaal watched the midfielder during Liverpool’s Monday night defeat to Manchester City and is prepared to fork out a cool £20 million to secure his services.

United inquired about Allen prior to him joining Liverpool two years ago but baulked at the £15m transfer fee.

But United are a club in crisis right now and badly need bolstering in midfield with new signing Ander Herrera unavailable, along with Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick – all three suffering with foot/ankle injuries.

It is understood Van Gaal does not feel Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley are the players to take United forward and has asked chief executive Ed Woodward to look at bringing in Allen.

We’re taking this one with more than the average pinch of salt.
