Best signings of the Summer

by Ciaran Fallon

Since the transfer window opened last summer all 20 Premier League teams were very busy in improving their squads. Whether it was free transfer signings or £20 million and over, they have all added new players to their squads. Here is the best eleven of players bought so far this season.

Goalkeeper: Jaaskelainen (West Ham)

The former Finnish international was a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers and he has been terrific for them this season. At 37 he has shown that he still has what it takes to play in The Premier League, pulling off some wonderful saves. He still has a few more years in him.

Right back: Geoff Cameron ( Stoke City)

After arriving from Houston Dynamo in the Summer on a free transfer not many premier league fans knew much about Cameron, but that has all changed. The USA international is a quality right back and is very good on the ball. Very quick and has settled in very well for Stoke starting every week.

Centre back: Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)

Even though Villa has not had the most convincing Premier League campaign Vlaar has been in fine form. Captain for the season and him and Ciaran Clark at times have proved to be a good centre back partnership. Bought for around £3 million and is the type of player Lambert needs for the future.

Centre back: Matija Nastasic (Manchester City)

At only 19, Nastasic could go on to be one of the best centre backs in world football. Bought for around £15 million from Italian side Fiorentina with Savic going the other way. The Serb can only get better, his composure and dominance at the back makes him seem so much older than he is. Big transfer fee but will turn out to be a bargain in the future.

Left back: Jan Verthonghen (Tottenham)

Mainly a centre back but has really impressed in his role at left back. Bought from Ajax for £10 million and at 25 this was a very good deal for Spurs. The Belgian was wanted by Spurs and Arsenal for 2 years, and finally Spurs won the battle and have a fantastic player in theIR squad. Has a thunderbolt shot which we will see more of in years to come.

Right wing : Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Chelsea payed big money to bring him to Stamford Bridge and he certainly has delivered. Chelsea has missed a winger like Hazard, who loves to beat players and link up with his team mates. 32 million is a lot for a 21 year old but if he continues to play like he has this season it could turn out to be one of their best signings since Drogba.

Centre midfielder: Michu (Swansea)

Surely so far the signing of the season. Bought for 2 million from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, Michu has set the premier league a light. With 13 premier league goals already the Spaniard could end up with the golden boot at the end of the season. When Sigurdsson decided to join Tottenham instead of Swansea,  Micheal Laudraup had a tough task finding a replacment, but he ended up pulling off a massive coup.

Centre midfielder: Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)

16.5 million seems like a bargain, with Cazorla lighting up The Premier League week in week out. Arsene Wenger doesn’t usually spend this much money on a player but he will  have no regrets. If Arsenal want to qualify for The Champions League this year keeping Cazorla fit will be crucial.

Left-wing: Steven Pienaar (Everton)

His second stint at Everton has got off to a great start. Bought back from Tottenham for £4.5 million, he has made a huge difference and has been instrumental in Evertons great season . Has had a lot of assists and even grabbed a late goal against his former club. At 30 still has a lot to give to Everton.

Striker: Robin Van Persie (Manchester United)

A transfer that dragged on for the whole Summer but finally happened and Man United fans will be delighted it did. Van Persie has continued where he left off last season scoring goals for fun. Bought for £24 million and at 28 Van Persie is in the form of his life and can only get better.

Striker: Christian Benteke (Aston Villa)

It’s hard to believe he is only 22. Benteke is well suited to the Premier League he is physical, good on the ball and a great finisher. Bought for £7 million, but is so talented a move to a bigger club will surely happen next summer. With Villa set to make a huge profit.
