Aussie presenter causes Twitter meltdown over Hillsborough comments

Memorial HillsboroughMelbourne based radio presenter Tom Elliott has sparked outrage on Twitter today by suggesting that fan violence caused the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Elliott, who is well known for his anti-football opinions, made the comments during his daily drive show on 3AW.

The topic came up in relation to the weekend’s Melbourne Derby where a number of seats were ripped up by fans at the Etihad Stadium, and Elliott’s association of that with the Hillsborough disaster displayed a level of ignorance that should have disappeared with British Prime Minister David Cameron’s apology back in September.

Immediately Twitter exploded into a rage with fans of all clubs directing angry comments twoards Elliott and the radio station.

A caller to the station pulled Elliott up for his comments, before Fox Sports presenter Adam Peacock also joined the conversation on air.

Neither 3AW or Elliott have issued a formal apology thus far, preferring to simply post extracts from the show on their website.
