Aston Villa sign Richard Dunne

MANCHESTER CITY V GLASGOW CELTICAston Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester City to sign central defender Richard Dunne.

The 29-year-old City skipper is travelling to the Midlands for talks about a move to Villa Park, after nine years with the Eastlands club where he was eventually appointed captaincy.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill is trying to bolster his backline before the end of the transfer window, having already lined up a move for Stephen Warnock from Blackburn Rovers.

Aston Villa recently loss defensive rock Martin Laursen to retirement, and Curtis Davies may have to undergo surgery on a shoulder injury. The club also sold centre-half Zat Knight to Bolton this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international has been ousted out of the Eastlands club by new signings Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure in Mark Hughes’ overhaul of the team this summer, despite being a vital member of the line-up in recent seasons.

Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin had also been linked with a move to Villa Park, although he is set to join Everton rather than be reunited with his former City team-mate.
