The eastern shores of the Iberian peninsula may three new top flight teams come August.

Sunday nights play-off encounters saw Girona finish off Alcorcon with a three one victory to the Catalan side giving them a five two aggregate victory, whilst nine man Las Palmas fell to the inevitable when they were pipped on extra time at Almeria.

As a consequence, La Segunda’s third and fourth placed teams will be rattling their sabres at one another come Wednesday in Catalunya with the return on Saturday down South in Spaghetti Western country – remarks like sharp shooter, show-down etc. will have to wait.

Off the pitch, Madrid continue to hold out for Carlo Ancelotti to turn up on Castellana as the PSG owners continue to delay the incumbents departure. Apparently they’re keen on getting somebody new in situ before mapping Carlito’s Way out. Oye Como Va
Frustrating when people prevaricate, isn’t it Florentino.

In London – or possibly Paris, or perhaps even whilst bopping away at Space in Ibiza – the agent of Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has been forced to deny that Barça are performing their annual summer sniff for another of Arsene Wengers proteges. We probably know which way that will go, although FC Bayern are thought to be offering the opportunity of donning some leather hot-pants, an undersized trilby and a front row seat at the Oktoberfest to the hitherto hit and miss defender, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Rayo Vallacano will be lining up in a revolutionary 0-11-0 formation come next season after local hero Piti has announced his intention to leave the club. He joins Chori Dominguez, England botherer Delibasic and a host of other first team regulars in the clamour for the exit as Paco Jemez ponders life without recognised strikers or goalkeepers.

In Brazil La Roja kicked-off their Confederations Cup challenge with a two one win over the beautifully manned Copa America holders Uruguay. Of note was Saint Iker of Mostoles’ appearance between the sticks for Spain which has been his first appearance in months. Welcome back Iker and adieu one and all.

Until next week.
