Are Arsenal to test Man Utd’s resolve for Wayne Rooney?

by Kevin Coleman

The Daily Mail are reporting that Arsenal are interested in trying to lure Wayne Rooney to the Emirates in January.

They believe the arrival of Mesut Ozil on the summer deadline day will help persuade the English striker of a move, allowing him to be the main striker again with plenty of quality service around him in the German, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla.

Rooney was out of England’s midweek World Cup qualifying tie but started for Manchester Utd 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace yesterday, scoring directly from a free-kick.

The 27-year-old was subject to a couple of bids from Chelsea this summer, but David Moyes and co. stood firm on their decision to keep him at the club. A bigger bid of around £40million may be enough to tempt them to part ways with the player, who has handed in transfer requests in the past.

Despite much criticism of Arsene Wenger this summer and the Gunners’ transfer policies, they’ve had a strong start to the season with three wins from four games. They sit top of the league, but may fall to second depending on Liverpool’s game with Swansea City on Monday night.

Rooney’s deal runs out in 18-months and Arsenal will be prepared to offer him a lucrative new deal to come to London. Arsenal were unsuccessful in their move for Luis Suarez this summer, and with Liverpool unlikely to sell to their fellow Premier League club, it is unlikely the Uruguayan will be going to Arsenal any time soon.

A move for Wayne Rooney would be a huge move for Arsenal, but may come with risks. Would Arsenal fans be happy spending £40million or more on the controversial forward?
